1 Mar 12 19:00

NOTE - THIS IS A LIVE CINEMA SCREENING BROADCAST FROM THE NATIONAL THEATRE IN LONDON

National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking initiative to broadcast the best of British theatre to cinemas around the world. It has been a huge hit in the UK, and will be coming to Selby Town Hall for a new season this spring. Three productions from London's National Theatre will be broadcast live, via satellite, to the venue.

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

I in earth, in heaven, or in hell?
Sleeping or waking? mad or well advised?
Known unto these, and to myself disguised!

Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. And for no one more so than Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio who, in search of their brothers, arrive in a land entirely foreign to their distant home. A buzzing metropolis, to the outsiders it appears a place of wonderment and terror, where baffling gifts and unexplained hostilities abound.

Do you know me, sir? Am I Dromio? Am I your
man? Am I myself?

Consistently recognised by strangers, the visitors question their very selves as the turmoil escalates. Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset. Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will be staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. Lenny Henry plays Antipholus of Syracuse

Selby Town Hall is an award winning arts centre, located in a prominent position at the end of Selby's main street, Gowthorpe. The intimate venue, with a seating capacity of 150, hosts world class performances from across a range of art forms including theatre, music, dance and comedy.

Built as a Methodist chapel in 1862, the venue ceased operating as a place of worship in August 1956. For several years following it was used as a tyre depot, but the building was eventually left derelict and fell into disrepair in the late 80s. In 1992, Selby Town Council bought and renovated the premises which now houses the Town Council offices as well as the main performance space and a smaller studio room.
