The technique, believed to have been pioneered in Bradford, affects locks using the 'euro cylinder' style locks, fitted as standard with uPVC doors.
The method involves applying significant force to the cylinder of the lock, literally snapping it in two.
Videos posted to the internet have shown that the technique can allow access to properties in just a matter of seconds.
Police have said that whilst lock-snapping burglaries in North Yorkshire is at 'minimal' levels when compared with other areas in the country, now is an ideal opportunity to consider the replacement of Euro cylinder locks, which they say can be done fairly simply.
They recommend that all vulnerable doors using the Euro-Profile cylinders should be upgraded using 'Break Secure' cylinders. These new cylinders should be compliant with British Standard 'BS EN 1303:2005'.
