The temporary appointment follows the departure of Chief Inspector Richard Anderson who moves on from his old post after two and a half years.
Having being part of the Selby Safer Neighbourhood Command for almost four years, Acting Chief Insp Abbott is looking forward to his new duties.
Speaking of his appointment, Acting Chief Insp. Abbott said, "I am pleased to be continuing the great work the team has delivered across the district over the last three years, under the guidance of Supt. Anderson,
"Crime rates and anti-social behaviour continue to fall as we maintain our efforts to bring offenders to justice.
"We are working with our communities and other agencies to ensure that Selby remains a good place to live and raise a family.
"Although this promotion is only temporary, I am committed to doing my very best for the communities across the district to keep them a safe place to live and work."
Acting Chief Insp. Abbot's new duties will include working with partners in the area by sitting on the board for each of the four of the rural forums known as the Community Engagement Forums (CEFs).
The temporary promotion is for the period leading to the end of March 2012, after which time Acting Chief Insp Abbott will return to his previous rank of Inspector, remaining within the Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team.
Outgoing Chief Inspector, Richard Anderson, has left Selby having being promoted to Superintendent - transferring to the force's control room in York.
Superintendent Anderson said, "I am really pleased with the accomplishments the police and partner agencies have achieved in the Selby District over the last few years.
"Since 2008, crime has reduced by over 20% and anti-social behaviour by a similar amount.
"I know that Richard Abbott and the team will continue to drive down crime and improve the quality of life in the Selby district."
