Fire fright for Byram pensioner

Friday, 27 January 2012 13:23

Fire Service officers from Selby attended a fire in Byram yesterday after a pensioners kitchen caught fire.

An automatic fire alarm was triggered at the home in Marlborough Avenue, Byram after a toaster which was left on top of a cooker hob caught fire when the hob was accidentally been switched on.

The fire was attended by one appliance from the Selby station and another from Knottingley, West Yorks.

An 80 year old occupant was able to get out of the property prior to the arrival of emergency brews, but was suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

She was given oxygen by the fire officers and taken to Pinderfields Hospital by paramedics as a precaution.

By the time the fire was extinguished, it had spread to an extractor fan and the roof of the property, causing 10% severe fire damage to the kitchen and 10% fire damage to the hob, extractor fan and the roof.
