West Yorkshire Police were called to the Fairburn Ings at around 4pm on Saturday, following reports of an assault at the nature reserve on the edge of the Selby District.
By 5:00 pm, air support from the force's helicopter unit was sought, with officers posting to their official twitter feed (@WYPHelicopter), "Officers dealing with a very violent male near river at Fairburn Ings nature reserve".
Following initial enquiries, police searched a house at an address on Kirkby Avenue in the Garforth area of Leeds where a 31 year old woman and an 8 year old girl were found dead.
Police also found a 4 year old girl with minor injuries. She was transported to Leeds General Infirmary, where she was later discharged.
A 36 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of Murder and Attempted Murder. He was later named by the BBC as John Miller, the deceased woman's partner.
Police have said that their enquiries are still ongoing but have urged anyone with any information that could assist officers in their investigations to contact their non emergency number, 101.
