The new 101 number, costing 15p per call at any time, is being rolled out across England and Wales and has today reached the North Yorkshire Area.
You should call 101 to report less urgent crime and disorder or to speak to your local officers.
You should continue to call 999 when it is an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.
The 101 number replaces a patchwork of different numbers for local police stations across the country.
Some police forces had previously been criticised for using expensive 0845 and 0870 numbers in which the forces were able to take a share of the revenue generated from call charges.
