Rename for historic Selby pub

Thursday, 25 November 2010 22:58

A Finkle Street boozer will soon be re-opening it's doors sporting the name with which it opened more than 200 years ago.

Known as The Elizabethan since the coronation of The Queen in 1953 the pub is due to revert to it's original historical name of Mellanby's within the next couple of weeks.

The pub has been undergoing a number of improvements since earlier in the year when it was taken over by new landlord Ian Campe.

The building has played a key part in the history of the town, being the birthplace of famous chemist Smithson Tennant.  The chemist was the first to isolate the rare mobile metals osmium and iridium from platinum deposits.
