History of Healaugh

Bertram Haget granted hermitage land in the wood at Healaugh to Gilbert, a monk of Marmoutier. His son confirmed the charter and it was witnessed by Abbot Clement, St Mary's York, who succeeded in 1161 and died in 1184 therefore the hermitage must have been founded around this time.

Henry, Prior of Marton, quitclaimed the rights over the hermitage in 1203. A Church was built on the site dedicated to St John the Evangelist. Alice, daughter of Bertram Haget inherited Healaugh. Alices daughter, Alice established the Augustinian Priory with her husband around 1218.

In 1540 James Gage took possession of the priory. He alienated it to Sir Arthur D'Arcy and later it became the possession of Marquis of Wharton. Now known as Manor Farm.
